He’s Aram Zucker-Scharff.

As technology manager, Aram is galvanizing digital projects online at George Mason University’s Office of Student Media. From community journalism to online video to video editing software, he’ll demonstrate a range of cool media seeking our feedback in the process.

Aram’s very interested in hearing reactions to:

the election site

the convergence site

the new blog network (launching at the end of August)

And chocolate? It’ll be there.

IMPORTANT NOTE: September’s meeting has been moved to September 30, instead of the previously scheduled September 23.

This meeting is going to be fantastic! Look at who we have lined up for September 30th:

Andy Carvin, DC Media Makers co-founder and NPR Senior Social Media Strategist, will be speaking about PublicMediaCamp: Strengthening Public Broadcasting Through Community Collaboration.

Ever since the NPR API came out a year ago, we’ve toyed around with the idea of inviting local coders to NPR headquarters over pizza and beer to see what kinds of apps and mashups we could come up with together. It seemed like a fun idea, but we realized there was an opportunity for something even more powerful. What if we brought together all sorts of people interested in collaborating with public radio and public TV, to see what we could come up with, including digital tools, citizen journalism and other types community-centered initiatives?

As we talked with our colleagues across the public media system and beyond, it became clear we needed to host a really big camp – a national PublicMediaCamp, that is.

Mana Rabiee is an Iranian-American multimedia journalist and documentary filmmaker whose career has taken her to New York, Paris, Tehran and the UK. Before coming to Washington, Mana was a news anchor for PressTV, Iran?s state-run 24-hour English-language news network. She is the recipient of documentary production grants from international film festivals and is currently in post-production on a feature-length doc about Iran?s Basij youth. Her latest video work will commence the Fall schedule of Focal Point, an online-exclusive series of documentary shorts from Wide Angle. Mana currently reports local news for WAMU-FM, the National Public Radio affiliate in the nation?s capitol.

Mana will screen some of her online clips, share production notes as a documentarian, and seek feedback about her online storytelling.

…and cookies.

Also, we’ve started using Meetup instead of Socialzr, because it makes organizing these events and the RSVPs a whole lot easier (and cuts down a lot on the spam RSVPs!).

RSVP (and learn more about this month’s meeting) here: www.meetup.com/dc-media-makers/calendar/11369630/

Want to talk-up speakers on Twitter or chat on our meetups there in general? Our very own Twitter hashtag: #dcmm

Best till then (remember, September 30th),

And May of this year, Allyson through the Women Who Tech TeleSummit convened over 600 women from across the US and abroad in the non-profit, political and business world for an incredible lineup of thought provoking panels featuring technology change makers such as Joan Blades of MoveOn to Charlene Li, and Lisa Stone of BlogHer to discuss getting more women involved in open source, breaking through the digital ceiling and more.

Presenters for our next meetup (…they’re great!):

1.) Lucas Cioffi with www.DeepDebate.org

Passionate about ideas, Lucas and team are exploring new ways to improve online conversations. In order to do this, they’ve built a framework which makes it easier for a very large number of people to create a structured conversation.

2.) Adam Bonnifield with www.Contribune.org

Contribune enables users to post all kinds of content — including news items, videos, and journal entries. Then it lets you aggregate and filter the stories that motivate people most, based on which stories actually lead people to donate, sign petitions, volunteer or complete other custom conversion activities.

Big thanks to guru media maker at National Public Radio – Andy Carvin – for making this happen.

DC Media Makers and you:
When it comes to making media, DC Media Makers’ preferred MO is “have fun, learn, create, share, repeat.”

So are you passionately interested in all things digital education i.e. online video, podcasts, mobile blogging, screencasting, and more?
If so – don’t walk but RUN to join in.

No matter what your level of experience with digital tech or media, there’s a place for you here. Share a favorite online video clip from your personal or professional portfolio or a new editing software or other production tips or a new project idea.

Bottom line:
DC Media Makers is the ‘big tent’ for peer learning and promoting digital literacy in DC.

For Thursday, Oct 16th:
Bring you, your laptops, and your championed gadget gear.

At this meetup, a few folks will share their cool media goals-in-motion (including projects at NPR!).

And remember our feedback community:
–Do you want feedback on any particular media project or concept on your mind? We’re glad to listen and offer suggestions in that frank yet friendly way.

Also on Oct 16th, we’ll casually breakout into groups to work on projects or test out new tools that you want to teach us.

Will there be snacks?
…likely!
